"Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" - Matthew 11:3
While in prison, John the Baptist struggled to understand another light – the "light of the world" (John 8:12). Yes, he had baptized the Lord in the Jordan and declared, "This is the Son of God" (John 1:34). But now, alone in his dungeon, John was plagued by doubts (Matthew 11:2). Was it truly right? Had he been mistaken? So John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to Jesus and asked, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" (verse 3). In response, the Lord pointed to His miracles and the Gospel (verse 5), adding, "Blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me" (verse 6).
We all have moments when we doubt Christ, wondering if He is the light we hoped for. The Lord understands everything. He did not rebuke John for his doubts. Instead, He helped him stand firm, reassuring him with His words and deeds.
The light of Christ never changes or fades. If we also take the time to look to the Lord and listen to Him in the Gospels, we can receive comfort and strength from Him (verse 4).
Lord Jesus, I thank You for not wanting me to turn away from You. Please continue to help me be assured that You are the way, the truth, and the life today (John 14:6).
