Learning to Be Content
Bible Readings
- Philippians 4:10-13 - But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
- Psalms 103:19 - The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
- Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
- Philippians 3:10 - That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Trusting in God's faithfulness, we can be content no matter what we face. We often associate contentment with pleasant moments, and if something goes wrong, our contentment disappears. But today's passage isn't about that. Paul learned to be content regardless of his circumstances. This is wonderful news for us, because it means we are not dependent on our circumstances. We too can learn to be content, no matter what. We must remember: Paul was content because he trusted in God's faithfulness. He knew the Lord keeps situations completely under control and has promised to work everything for the good of His children. Paul had begun to understand that there is always security in God's sovereign, loving hand. His contentment also stemmed from focusing his attention on Christ. Even though he was writing from prison, Paul wasn't feeling sorry for himself. Throughout his letter to the Philippians, he spoke about Jesus. In fact, his greatest goal in life was to know Christ, His power, and the divine joy that comes from sharing in His sufferings. Every situation was an opportunity to know his Savior more deeply. Circumstances cannot create lasting contentment, but it can be found in Jesus. Surrendering our lives to Him may not change the situation, but it will change us. Then, no matter what difficulties arise, we can truly be content.
