- 1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- Psalm 32:5 - I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
- Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For some of us, guilt becomes a constant companion. We live under the weight of past mistakes and the fear of making new ones. Even when we try to move forward, self-condemnation continues to follow us.
Guilt arising from the violation of biblical or human laws can be justified. When we sin, the Holy Spirit shows us what was wrong and how to correct it. And when we confess our sin, God always grants us forgiveness and cleanses us from guilt (Psalm 31:5).
However, some experiences of guilt are false. Where do they come from? There can be several reasons. The enemy, through lies and accusations, tries to replace inner peace with confusion, and joy with despondency. Legalism can also be a source of guilt. God's Word shows us how we should live, but sometimes Christians or churches add extra rules to it. Childhood experiences can also cause feelings of guilt. This can happen due to the consequences of traumatic events or the feeling that we did not meet our parents' expectations, and then we begin to judge ourselves too harshly.
Romans 8:1 says: 'There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.' If you are struggling with false guilt, ask the Lord to help you remember who you are in Him.
