- Joshua 1:8 - This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
- Psalm 1:2-3 - But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
God told Joshua how the people of Israel would take the Promised Land, and along with that, He gave an important instruction: meditate on His Law day and night and obey everything written in it. The psalmist also teaches the importance of meditating on the Holy Scriptures. We must dwell on the Word of God every day, focusing our attention on His character and His ways. This includes reading His Word in prayer and remaining silent before Him so that we can hear His voice and apply these truths to our lives. Of course, this does not happen automatically. Distractions pull our attention away, so we must set aside specific times when we can be quiet and listen. Meditating on the Holy Scriptures calms our souls, helps us see the direction for our lives more clearly, ensures we feel God's presence more deeply, and causes us to desire the Word more, so that we may know Jesus more deeply and understand His power more. To do this, we may sometimes need to wake up earlier or give up other time during the day. But in order to live a life full of peace and joy that is centered on Christ, it is essential that we regularly direct our minds and hearts toward Him.
