- Psalms 141:3 - Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
Gossip reveals the heart of the speaker more than it reveals the person being spoken about. Therefore, when you feel the urge to discuss others, you need to pause and look to God. First, we should confess this before the Lord and ask Him to guard our words. It is helpful to pray the prayer of David: 'Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord.' This prayer helps us be more careful about what we say. It is also important to stay away from conversations that involve gossip. Such environments can easily lead a person into sin. The best step is to either stop such a conversation or not join in. It is wiser to pray for a person instead of talking about them. Prayer changes both the situation and our hearts. God calls us to encourage, comfort, and build one another up, not to tear them down with words.
