- 2 Timothy 2:4 - No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
- Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
When our attention is fixed on Christ, distractions lose their power. In today's passage, Paul writes, "No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, rather, he aims to please his commanding officer" (2 Timothy 2:4). The imagery is clear: a soldier who is too preoccupied with other matters is no longer free to carry out the orders of his commander. Paul was not telling Timothy to abandon all earthly responsibilities. After all, Paul himself worked as a tentmaker while in ministry. He was warning that daily cares must not take precedence over our devotion to Christ. If our work, finances, or recreation keep us so busy that prayer, God's Word, and our life of faith take a backseat, then we have become entangled in those things. Providing for one's family, working, increasing resources, and resting are good gifts from God. However, we must be careful that these gifts do not pull us away from a life of prayer, studying the Scriptures, and fellowship with believers. Furthermore, we should not divide our lives into "ministry time" and "regular life." Wherever we are and whatever we do, we are people created by God and possessing new life in Christ (Ephesians 2:10). Everything given by God—our profession, our opportunities, and our leisure time—should be used for His glory. The question is not whether we should work or rest. The question is: do these good things keep us from serving the Lord, or are they beginning to take His place in our lives?
Reflection
Do these good things (work, family, rest) keep you from serving the Lord, or are they beginning to take His place in your life?
