- John 15:4-6 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
- Hebrews 12:1 - Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Today's text calls us to stay closely connected to Jesus. The depiction of Christ as the vine and believers as the branches shows us that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Although a believer is saved, they can for a time live according to the flesh and act against God's will without relying on His power. In the life of every believer, there are times when their attention drifts from Christ. Sometimes a person drifts so far that it becomes difficult to even see the way back.
If you see that your heart is more attached to something other than Christ, it is important to honestly admit it. Confess before the Lord the wrong attitudes and behaviors that draw you away from Him, and choose to refocus your attention on Him.
After removing the distractions, turn back to Jesus through reading the Word of God, praying, studying Scripture, and fellowshipping with believers who can encourage you. After living apart from God's will for a time, it may be difficult to discipline yourself to live as the Lord wants. But remember: those who remain in Christ bear much fruit (John 15:5).
Hebrews 12:1 calls us to "lay aside every weight" and run with endurance the race that is set before us. Following God's path while relying on His strength is the way that leads to peace, joy, and fulfillment in life.
