- Galatians 5:17-21 - For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Envy is one of those feelings that can catch us off guard. Sometimes we don't even realize we are envying until we catch ourselves comparing our situation to others—their success, their relationships, and their opportunities. This is a struggle that people face often, but that doesn't make it any less destructive.
The answer to where envy comes from might be surprising: its source is not external circumstances, but within us. We might tell ourselves, 'They don't really have the right to have that. They don't deserve it, so it's perfectly justified for me to feel this way.' However, this thought exposes the real problem: at the root of envy lies the belief that we are owed something or our own insecurity. In the Epistle to the Galatians, Paul lists envy among the works of the flesh—attitudes and behaviors that are contrary to God's character and the work He is doing in our lives.
Covetous feelings can lead us to compare ourselves with others in an unhealthy way, which often turns into competition. If left unchecked, envy creates resentment and damages relationships.
Although envy is a feeling with which many people struggle, it should have no place in the life of a believer. When we notice thoughts that produce envy within us, we must bring them sincerely to the Lord. He understands our struggles and gives us grace so that instead of focusing on what others have, we can learn to be content with what He has given us.
Reflection
When you catch yourself comparing your life to others, what blessings that God has provided for you can you thank Him for?
