- 1 Corinthians 8:9 - But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
- 1 Corinthians 8:11 - And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
- 1 Corinthians 8:12 - But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
As believers, we are called to be sensitive and attentive to those who are new to the faith. How should we make our decisions—by thinking mainly of ourselves, or by considering how our actions will affect the people around us? This question is vital for believers. As we grow in faith, it is possible for our understanding of freedom in Christ to outweigh our sensitivity toward others. We may make choices that are perfectly normal and comfortable for us, but a believer who is younger in the faith or not yet established may find this confusing. The issue here is not necessarily that we are sinning. The issue is that we may stop considering that our freedom can shake the faith of another. Paul addresses this matter directly in 1 Corinthians 8, calling believers to act not out of guilt, but out of love. He reminds us that a spiritually mature believer is responsible not only for their own behavior but also for the impact of their behavior on others. The question is not just: “Am I free to do this?” We must also ask: “Will doing this help the faith of my brother, for whom Christ died, or will it harm it?” Christian liberty is a gift from God, but it was never given to be used without consideration for others. We live our faith before the eyes of people. Something that seems like freedom to us can be a source of confusion or a stumbling block for someone else. This does not mean that every personal opinion of others should become law for us. The point is to consider the faith of others with love and spiritual maturity. When the Holy Spirit shapes both what we do and how our actions affect those around us, our freedom ceases to be just about exercising our rights and becomes an expression of love.
