Where is Our Heart?
Bible Readings
- Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
- Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
One of the most important topics in the Bible is our own heart. Throughout biblical history, God shows that He is less interested in your money, time, or service than He is in your heart.
Why is this so important? Jesus taught His disciples that the heart is the center of our lives. Our feelings and desires originate from the condition of our heart. If we allow God to be the guide in our heart, our whole life will follow Him.
In Matthew 6:21, Jesus says that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also. What we value in our lives shows where our heart is. What we think about, what we spend our money and energy on — our heart is there.
But it is not enough to simply stop our heart from focusing on these things. Instead, we must train our hearts to focus on Jesus. The Apostle Paul encourages us to focus on God's concerns:
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8
This kind of thinking causes our heart to value Jesus as a treasure more than anything on earth.
Spending time in God's Word and prayer is an excellent way to redirect your heart back to God.
🤔 Reflection
If you are honest with yourself, where do you think your treasure currently is? What do you dedicate your time to and what do you spend your money on? Consider how these reveal where your heart truly is.
