The Power of the Holy Spirit
Bible Readings
- Galatians 5:22-26 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
- Luke 24:49 - And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
The Holy Spirit transforms the believer from within.
The Holy Spirit is vitally important for the Christian. Read today's passage which explains the fruit of the Spirit in detail. It is impossible to reach this level of Christ-likeness on our own. We need divine intervention to live as God expects. That is why He sent the Comforter to believers, to cultivate Christ-like character in us.
Our Heavenly Father knows His children need support. Therefore, before Jesus returned to heaven, He commanded His disciples to pause their missionary work until the Holy Spirit came.
The Spirit enters the believer's life at the moment of salvation and immediately begins the work of cultivating spiritual fruit. This is the outward expression of a changed heart. When we surrender to God's loving hand, our actions and attitudes become more loving, more joyful, more peaceful, more patient, more kind, more good, more faithful, more gentle, and more self-controlled. He reaps a harvest of service from our lives – good works that grow our faith and expand His kingdom.
For the Holy Spirit to develop Christ-like character, we must not be passive observers. Our task is to meditate on God's Word so that we can gain knowledge of His character and apply His principles. Then, every day, we must make wise decisions that allow the Spirit to cultivate godliness in our lives.
