Service is Confession
Bible Readings
- Psalms 100:1-2 - Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
- Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Every person who believes in Christ is called to serve. Sometimes there is a perception that believers are divided into two groups: "ministers" (those in full-time service) and "ordinary believers." But the Bible does not recognize such a division. On the contrary, Paul, whose profession was tentmaking, reminds us that we have been saved to serve. The feeling of gratitude for God saving us is, in itself, a sufficient reason to serve Him. We were saved, received eternal life, and were endowed with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Our service is our confession of what the Father did for us by sending His Son. But there is also a danger. Many people—even believers—are actually serving the great "self." They constantly live with these questions: What satisfies me? What is pleasant for me? How can I become more comfortable and prosperous? There is a bitter but simple truth: If "self" is our master, then we are engaging in "self-worship" (egotism). Everything that is placed above God—even selfish desires—becomes an idol. Service is not just a good idea. God calls us to service so that we may dedicate our lives to a purpose of eternal value: the salvation of others and their growth as disciples in Christ—for His glory. Our tasks may seem small, and our capabilities limited. But the truth is that we are all servants of Christ, and each of us has a role in God's Kingdom.
🤔 Reflection
What specific action can you take today to serve God instead of "self," and how can you embrace your role in God's Kingdom?
