Seeing Jesus in Our Circumstances
Bible Readings
- Philippians 1:12-25 - But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;
- Philippians 1:12-14 - But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Our difficult circumstances can be the means God chooses to fulfill His will through us.
If you had the power to change your circumstances, would you? Most of us would quickly say "yes." But the reality is that we must learn to live with some difficult situations because only God has the power to change them. And in His wisdom, He has allowed them to remain.
Consider Paul, who wanted to preach the Gospel in Rome but did not expect the path God would use. It began with false accusations in Jerusalem, an appeal to Caesar, a sea voyage, a shipwreck, and time spent in prison. Yet, chained to a Roman guard, he wrote in his letter that his "circumstances have actually served to advance the gospel," because everyone knew that the reason for his imprisonment was for Christ, and many, taking courage, began to testify (Philippians 1:12-14).
God can allow things that look like shipwrecks or changes in direction in our plans. This could be financial difficulties, health problems, or conflicts in relationships, but there is one thing we can hold onto firmly: Jesus Christ is our life, and He never changes.
The circumstances around us will be changeable, but if we belong to Christ, He will use every situation to accomplish His will in and through us. May our desire also be like Paul's: whatever happens, may Jesus be glorified in us.
🤔 Reflection
How do you see God using your difficult circumstances to accomplish His will? Like Paul, how can you desire for Christ to be glorified in your challenges?
