- 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 - According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
- Colossians 3:23–24 - And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
This passage conveys a serious message about heavenly rewards and how they are earned. Paul compares service in the Kingdom of God to a builder's work. He says the foundation is Christ alone, but it is each of our responsibilities to decide what we build upon that foundation. We can build with wood, grass, and hay, or with gold, silver, and precious stones. Everyone's work will be tested by fire, and the quality of the materials used will be revealed. If the work we build passes this test, we will receive a reward. For our deeds to last, we must learn to build with 'materials' that have eternal, not temporary, value. We will be judged not only for 'church work' but also for how we fulfill our daily responsibilities. This means we should perform our daily work with the same dedication as spiritual service. Ask yourself: Are you honest before the Lord? Remember that He knows our hearts and the authenticity of every situation. Our Heavenly Father expects the best from us, and for this, He has given His Spirit to change us so that we can live and serve in the quality He desires.
Reflection
How can you determine whether you are building your daily work and service with 'gold and precious stones' (eternal values) or 'hay' (temporary things)?
