Failure can be a turning point where we set aside our pride and follow God with all our hearts. Each of us will face failure—sometimes in ways that wound us deeply. Peter knew very well what that felt like. Jesus had warned him that Satan wanted to "sift him like wheat" to shake his faith (Luke 22:31). Peter was confident that this would not happen: "Even if all fall away, I will not" (Mark 14:29). Yet, his confidence relied on his own strength, and it was precisely at this point that the enemy struck. When Satan "sifts" believers, his goal is to cause such severe damage to their faith that they are sidelined from God’s work. He attacks especially the areas where we think we are strong, where we feel invincible or well-protected. Peter’s devotion to Jesus was sincere, but he was also proud of it—and his pride made him a target. When the enemy reaches his goal, despair and shame can paralyze a person. But we don’t have to stay there. If we are willing, God can use even our worst failures to change us. Peter’s denial of Jesus did not remove him from ministry. On the contrary, this event shattered the self-reliance that stood before him. Its place was taken by the courage given by the Holy Spirit. Thus, the man who was afraid of a servant girl’s question was transformed into someone who risked everything to proclaim the Gospel (Acts 2:22-24). Failure was not the end of Peter’s story. It became a turning point.
