Disregarding God's Word
Bible Readings
- Jeremiah 36:23 - And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
It's striking how little the king respected God's Word in this verse. Because the king disliked what he heard, he burned each section of the book as it was read.
It can be easy for us to hear God's Word and genuinely dislike what it says. And when we do, we have a choice. Will we disregard it, or will we obey it? In today's verse, we see that the king disregarded what God's Word was telling him through the prophet Jeremiah.
We have the same choice. Like the king, we can disregard what God wants to tell us. And often, we do. Reading God's Word and obeying it sometimes takes effort. Sometimes it can be easier to disregard what it says and give it no importance.
But as followers of Jesus, we must consider the Word a priority in our lives. We must decide not to treat it as something we don't take seriously or forget. Instead, we must decide to make it the most important thing in our lives and live fully for Jesus.
