The Cost of Fleeing from God
Bible Readings
- Jonah 4:9-11 - And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
- Deuteronomy 5:33 - Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
Sometimes God's will may not be perfectly clear to us. But we can choose to trust His goodness and respond with faith. Jonah's story shows us that even if we outwardly obey God's command, our heart can flee from His will. Jonah's flight from God had physical, social, and emotional consequences. But the heaviest consequence was spiritual—he lived with anger and bitterness. As believers, we always pay a price when we oppose God's will. Perhaps in our lives, we have chosen a habit, a desire, or a path that goes against God's will. Have you considered the cost of this? God is holy and does not accept sin. The cost of choosing our own way is high, but if we obey the Lord, He will reward us with blessings. We can trust in His love, even if we don't fully understand His calling.
🤔 Reflection
What areas in your life do you find yourself resisting God's will? How can you choose to trust Him and obey with faith today, even if you don't fully understand His calling?
