- Romans 6:16-19 - Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 - For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
- Psalm 119:1-2 - Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
Even though sin tries to entice us, God has provided us with the power needed to resist temptation. Like a physical prison built brick by brick, a spiritual prison is constructed one sin after another. Falling into the trap happens slowly, and it all starts with a single thought. Over time, what we dwell on can turn into action.
However, we can escape spiritual chains. The first step to this is accepting two fundamental truths: every sin enslaves a person, and sin begins in the mind. We cannot maintain healthy communion with the Lord while knowingly harboring sin. When a wrong thought comes to mind, we have a choice: either reject it or accept it and dwell on it. By the power of the Holy Spirit, every believer can change their way of thinking.
Considering the long-term consequences of disobedient behavior is a powerful tool against temptation. Obeying the Lord always brings more joy, satisfaction, and purpose than choosing our own way. Therefore, the second step is to ask ourselves: "Is the short-term pleasure this sin offers worth its consequences?" The answer is inevitably no.
The third step is to build our lives according to the Holy Scriptures. This means choosing to submit to the Father, understanding that true freedom is found only in Him. Ask God today to speak to you through His Word. Be prepared to see what His Word shows you about your life.
