Discipleship: Training Followers

Bible Readings
  • 2 Timothy 2:1-2 - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
  • Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:11 - Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Discipleship is an opportunity to encourage new believers and invest in their spiritual growth. The Bible teaches us to tell others about Jesus Christ. Sharing the Gospel brings great joy, but our responsibility does not end there. We must continue to support new believers and help them grow in their faith. Think: who has influenced your spiritual life over the years? Who helped you come to know Jesus Christ and grow in faith? Without their love and support, where would you be today? This ministry is called discipleship, and it is a great honor. Along with sharing the Gospel, we can share our knowledge and experience to help others develop spiritually. To do this: Spend time with God. Prayer and Bible reading help us better understand God's Word. Be intentional. Teach new believers to read the Bible, build a habit of prayer, and fellowship with other believers. Share your experience. Talk about what it means to follow Christ and what challenges might arise. Adjusting to a new life in Christ has been a learning process for each of us. Therefore, the advice and encouragement of spiritually mature believers are very valuable. We are called to encourage one another. Truth for today: share what God has taught you. You too can help another believer grow in Christ.

Reflection

What lessons have you learned from the people who helped you grow in your faith, and who can you pass those lessons on to today?
