The Foundation of Wisdom
Bible Readings
- Proverbs 9:7-12 - He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth to himself a blot. Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
When we know God and obey Him, the Holy Spirit gives us wisdom that extends beyond the limits of human comprehension.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). At first, it might be difficult to understand the connection between these two concepts. How can fearing God make us wise?
First, we must understand what "the fear of the Lord" means. This term describes a magnificent reverence towards God that encourages us to accept Him as the Ruler of heaven and earth, to submit to Him, and to walk in obedience. The result of such a reaction will be the acquisition of wisdom.
When we dedicate ourselves to living not for our own purposes, but for God's purposes, we will understand Him better. The Holy Spirit will enable us to see situations and people from His divine perspective. Such wisdom transcends human comprehension and gives us the discernment to follow God's plans for our lives. Knowing that He always works for our best interests, we find the strength to walk confidently through both good and bad times.
What is your attitude towards the Lord? If you truly honor Him, you will listen to His instructions and heed His warnings. The desire to honor and please Him will encourage you to turn from wrong choices and live in obedience. As a result, wisdom superior to human reason will arise.
