- Exodus 17:8-13 - Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:11 - Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
Walking the path of life together with people who share the same faith gives us counsel and support in doing great things for the Lord. Before the world was created, God determined a plan for your life and guides you on the path of righteousness. He never intended for you to walk this path alone. People were created for relationships. That is why God gives you believing brothers and sisters who encourage, guide, befriend, and work side-by-side with you. In the Scriptures, we repeatedly see how people who follow God benefited from the help of others. Let's look at Moses. He led the people of Israel to freedom, received the Ten Commandments, and led the people. It is easy to imagine him as a leader acting alone. But Moses also had friends and loved ones who gave him wise counsel and help. In today's verses, we see him leaning on Aaron and Hur. God had set up a battle plan that involved all three men. They watched the battle against the Amalekites from the top of the hill. When Moses raised his staff, the Israelites were winning. But when his strength failed, the enemy began to advance. Therefore, Aaron and Hur helped Moses, holding his arms up to support him in fulfilling his task. People united in the Lord can do greater things than a person working alone. Moses' life shows this. He was a wise and powerful leader, partly thanks to the faithful support and wise counsel of people who shared the same faith. God calls us to serve not alone, but together. When we support one another, we can do greater things for the Lord.
Reflection
Are there people in your life like Aaron and Hur who support you during difficult moments? For whom can you be that kind of support?
